My Final Poster
The theme of my artwork is ‘Arts and legends communicate the philosophy of a culture’. The poster features the key signature of the key words of my theme – legends, arts, culture and philosophy. “Legends and arts design culture and philosophy,” is entitled as the mantra of the poster. The background is a drawing of a typical Chinese old town with the Chinese architecture and style. Overlaying it is an edited figure painting based on the legend of the Butterfly Lovers. The Ying and Yang symbol is also present, representing the teachings and principles of the Chinese philosophy. A panda is also present on the bottom right of the poster. The colour features various tones and moods.
The meaning behind my poster is that art, legends and philosophy are all significantly interrelated. Arts and culture is represented by the Chinese town in the background along with the panda, the Butterfly lovers symbolises the Chinese legends, while the Ying and Yang symbol represents the philosophy. Each of the different components of the poster, which symbolise its individual meaning, are connected through the blend of colours that although are of different moods (warm and cool), but are still able to produce a flawless blend.
Furthermore, Gestalt theory is also applied into the poster. The panda on the right is an example of the Gestalt principle of closure. Although the shape is incomplete, and the space is not entirely filled, but people can perceive the whole by filling in the ‘missing information’. In addition, the Ying and Yang symbol is an example of the Gestalt principle of figure ground, as the figure-ground relationship can be perceived differently. Moreover, I have also applied the grid layout guidelines, such as following the single column grid.
